Manuscript Evaluation through Proofreading

Developmental Editing (aka Structural Editing):
This is the next editing step after you have made the changes recommended in your manuscript evaluation. This is the process that shapes the final message of your manuscript. During developmental editing, I will make suggested edits to improve structure and flow, ensure the content is meeting your target audience expectation, improve messaging and overall narrative, and address any unnecessary or redundant information. Suggestions are made as comments on your manuscript, and you will then make the changes you agree with. This does not include edits for spelling, grammar, or syntax. Those edits occur at a later stage of editing.
Fee: $75/hour. Final fee will be negotiated and contracted and will depend on the condition and length of the manuscript. Generally, if I have provided the Manuscript Evaluation and am already familiar with it, a 60,000-word manuscript would range between $2400-$2700. If I have not previously worked with your manuscript, the fee would range between $3000-$3200.
Full Manuscript Evaluation:
This is the first phase of the editorial process. Manuscript evaluations are a complete read through of your manuscript to assess it for strengths and weaknesses. If you have gone through manuscript development with me, this is not a necessary step. However, if you have completed a manuscript on your own that you wish for me to evaluate, this service is for you. You will receive a three-to-six-page report that provides an overview of certain issues for you to address prior to the next editing step, which is developmental editing. Manuscript evaluations do not include edits, and does not involve giving feedback on a page-by-page basis (these concerns are addressed with a separate editorial step called line editing, which is listed below as a separate service)
Flat rate fee: $1200-$1500, based on 60,000 words. Most nonfiction books are between 50,000 and 80,000 words.
Timeframes for turnaround depend on the project and will be negotiated at the time of the contract.
Line Editing (aka Stylistic or Substantive Editing):
This step follows Developmental Editing and is done after you have made the changes to your manuscript that you wish to, based on the suggestions made during Developmental Editing. This is a meticulous combing-through of each sentence to enhance clarity, flow, and readability while maintaining the author’s voice. This refines the written work at the sentence level, focusing on language use, tone and writing style to ensure it resonates with the target audience. This is the only step where I will provide rewrites and edits directly to your manuscript. During line editing, I will reorganize, edit and rewrite phrases, sentences or paragraphs to fix issues like redundancies, awkward phrasing and repetition, while preserving your writing style and voice.

Generally, if I have provided Manuscript Evaluation and Developmental Editing and am already familiar with it, a 60,000-word manuscript would range between $2200-$2500. If I have not previously worked with your manuscript, the fee would range between $2600-$2900.

Copy Editing
This is a diligent scanning of lines for any inconsistencies or errors. This is the first step in the editing process where grammar, spelling, and punctuation are corrected. Additionally, I will ensure style consistency across the text from beginning to end. It is the final checkpoint before a manuscript moves toward publication.
Fee: 4 cents per word

Proofreading
This is the last pass at your work before it goes to press. No major changes are made at this point, it is simply ensuring that any spelling, punctuation or Format issues that occurred during previous edits are caught and remedied.
Fee: 3 cents per word
